Driving Economic Growth and Technological Advancement through Semiconductor Investments in India

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the United States, the semiconductor sector received significant attention, resulting in major investments that are expected to drive job creation in India. Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, announced that these developments would lead to the creation of a minimum of 80,000 to 1 lakh (100,000) direct jobs, with additional indirect job opportunities in the supply chain.

  • Micron Technology's Investment in Gujarat: Micron Technology, a US-based company, made a significant announcement during the visit, revealing plans to establish a new semiconductor assembly and test facility in Gujarat, India. With a projected investment of $2.75 billion, the facility will be set up in two phases. It is expected to create up to 5,000 direct jobs within the company and an additional 15,000 community jobs in the surrounding areas.


  • Applied Materials' Collaborative Engineering Center: Another notable announcement came from Applied Materials, a leading semiconductor company. They announced their intention to invest $400 million over four years to build a collaborative engineering center in India. This center will foster technological collaboration and contribute to the growth of India's semiconductor industry.


  • Lam Research's Training Program: Lam Research, a renowned US supplier of wafer-fabrication equipment and services, unveiled a comprehensive training program in India. The program aims to train and upskill up to 60,000 high-tech engineers, ensuring a skilled talent pool to support the expanding semiconductor industry in the country.
