Gemovac-OM: India's Indigenous Omicron-Specific mRNA Booster Vaccine Takes Center Stage in COVID-19 Vaccination Efforts

Gemovac-OM, India's Groundbreaking mRNA Vaccine, Raises Hope in COVID-19 Vaccination Efforts

India has achieved a significant milestone in the fight against COVID-19 with the official launch of Gemovac-OM, an Omicron-specific mRNA-based booster vaccine. Developed by Gennova using indigenous platform technology, Gemovac-OM has received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the Drug Control General of India (DCGI). This marks a major breakthrough as the first mRNA vaccine developed in India, contributing to the country's goal of self-reliance in vaccine production.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh unveils Gemovac-OM, India's groundbreaking mRNA vaccine developed by Gennova, marking a significant milestone in the country's fight against COVID-19.

Indigenous Technological Advancement

Gemovac-OM is the result of the innovative indigenous platform technology developed by Gennova, with support from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), who provided the necessary funding. The Ministry of Science & Technology acknowledges this achievement as a testament to DBT's commitment to fostering technology-driven entrepreneurship and the vision of Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) advocated by the Prime Minister.

Mission Covid Suraksha: Accelerating Indian Vaccine Development

Gemovac-OM is the fifth vaccine developed under the Mission Covid Suraksha initiative, which DBT and BIRAC implemented as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat 3.0 package. This mission aims to expedite the development of Indian COVID-19 vaccines. In just one year, Mission Covid Suraksha has achieved remarkable milestones, including the development of the world's first DNA vaccine for COVID-19, as well as support for the nation's first mRNA vaccine, intranasal vaccine candidates, and a subunit vaccine against COVID-19.

A 'Future-Ready' Technological Platform

The indigenous mRNA-platform technology utilized in Gemovac-OM holds immense potential for future vaccine development. This breakthrough technology platform, nurtured by consistent government investments, has fostered a robust entrepreneurship and startup ecosystem. The implications of this technology extend beyond Gemovac-OM, as it paves the way for the accelerated development of other vaccines, aligning with the government's vision of a 'future-ready' technological platform.

Thermostable and Easy to Deploy

Gemovac-OM offers several notable advantages, including its thermostable nature, which eliminates the need for ultra-cold chain infrastructure required by other approved mRNA-based vaccines. This feature simplifies the last-mile deployment of the vaccine throughout the country, as the existing supply chain infrastructure is fully capable of handling it. Furthermore, Gemovac-OM introduces the convenience of needle-free administration through the utilization of a needle-free injection device system. Clinical trials have demonstrated significantly higher immune responses, underscoring the importance of variant-specific vaccines in achieving the desired level of immune protection.

Gemovac-OM, India's pioneering mRNA vaccine developed using indigenous platform technology, represents a significant achievement in the country's battle against COVID-19. With the support of government investments in technology-driven innovation and entrepreneurship, this breakthrough technology platform holds immense potential for the rapid development of vaccines. The thermostable and needle-free characteristics of Gemovac-OM make it highly suitable for widespread deployment across the country, leveraging the existing supply chain infrastructure. By introducing Gemovac-OM, India takes another crucial step towards achieving self-reliance and bolstering its response to the ongoing pandemic.
