Honoring the Sacrifice of U.S. Troops with a Wreath-Laying Ceremony

President Joe Biden
and other government officials gathered at Arlington National Cemetery to honor Memorial Day and pay tribute to the sacrifices made by generations of U.S. troops. They participated in the traditional wreath-laying ceremony, where President Biden, accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Harris' husband Douglas Emhoff, took a moment of reflection in front of the wreath adorned with flowers and a red, white, and blue bow. Later, he bowed his head in prayer.

The Memorial Day ceremony followed an agreement reached between President Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy regarding raising America's debt limit. The deal, still awaiting congressional approval, aims to maintain nondefense spending at a relatively consistent level in the 2024 fiscal year, with a slight 1% increase the following year. Defense spending is projected to experience a 3% growth in fiscal 2024 and an additional 1% in fiscal 2025.

President Biden expressed pride in his administration's efforts to bring about a period of relative peace for the U.S. military after two decades of conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq. Keeping his campaign promise, he oversaw the end of the war in Afghanistan, which spanned 20 years and resulted in the loss of over 2,400 U.S. service members. However, the withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021 was met with criticism due to its chaotic execution and insufficient planning.

At present, the United States is leading a coalition of allies in providing military and economic assistance to Ukraine in response to the ongoing Russian invasion. While President Biden reiterated that he does not intend to deploy U.S. troops to the conflict, he strongly condemned Russia's actions and pledged support to Ukraine. The assistance includes the provision of artillery, tanks, drones, and training for the Ukrainian military, with recent agreements allowing allies to train Ukrainian forces using American F-16 jets.
Before the wreath-laying ceremony, the Bidens hosted a breakfast at the White House for various veterans organizations, military service members, military families, and senior Department of Defense officials. Following the ceremony, they planned to return to their home in Delaware to spend the remainder of the federal holiday.

Memorial Day has a rich historical background, originating in 1868 when Major General John A. Logan declared May 30 as Decoration Day. The purpose was to encourage Americans to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. The first significant observance of Decoration Day took place at Arlington National Cemetery, where flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers alike, honoring their sacrifice.

On Memorial Day, certain services and businesses may have adjusted schedules. The United States Postal Service does not deliver mail, and post offices remain closed. UPS suspends most of its services, with the exception of its Express Critical services. FedEx also operates on a limited basis, while FedEx Office maintains modified hours. Most major retailers and grocery stores typically remain open, although some, like Costco, choose to close in observance of the holiday.
